Cheshire Paddle Boarding Guide

The Paddle Boarding scene in Cheshire is surprisingly varied and accessible to paddlers year round, so pump up your SUP and let’s go paddling!!

Where to SUP in Cheshire

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) remains the fastest growing water sport in the UK, and the good news is there are a number of locations in Cheshire where you can learn to SUP or self launch with your own board.

Manley Mere

Located in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, Manley Mere is one of the most popular SUP spots in the county. The man-made lake is dedicated to water sports, with its friendly and relaxed vibe providing the perfect environment for beginners and casual paddlers.

The lake is big enough to enjoy a decent paddle whilst also providing serenity for those that seek it, even on busy summer weekends!

Safety‑wise, it’s a controlled lake, so hazards are minimal and a safety boat is in operation as needed. Buoyancy aids are mandatory, as you would expect.

Manley Mere offers 1hr SUP taster lessons, paddle board hire or you can simply pay to go paddling with your own board.

Other water sports on offer include windsurfing, kayaking and open water swimming. Manley Mere also has an inflatable aquapark (summer only) and a muddy adventure trail for those who prefer to stay on land!

Note – you’ll need coins for the pay on entry barrier if visiting during weekdays. Refreshments are available at the onsite bar and cafe.

Wild Shore Delamere

Wild Shore Delamere opened in 2019 and is a big hit with SUPers from Cheshire and beyond. The self billed water-based adventure hub is located at Delamere Lake, a large freshwater lake situated close to Delamere Forest.

The team at Wild Shore offer a menu of SUP experiences covering all levels of ability. Beginner focused Learn 2 SUP lessons take place within SUP Bay which is a sheltered section of the main lake. Here the super friendly instructors will introduce you to the world of SUPing and equip you with the essential skills to go paddling.

Hire & Paddle allows you to practice in a dedicated paddle zone, enabling you to build confidence before transitioning to the main lake.

2 Hour self launch sessions give you access to the main lake and the opportunity to explore at your own pace.

For adrenaline seekers Wild Shore also offers Aqua Chimp (a floating ropes course), Aqua Park (a giant floating playground), cable Wakeboarding and Ringo (rubber rings) – a truly epic day out in rural Cheshire !

There is plenty of onsite parking and after your session why not indulge yourself with a homemade cake (or perhaps a Pizza if you are feeling more peckish) at The Wild Shack café – yum.

Cheshire Canals & Rivers

Unleash your inner adventurer by exploring the waterways of Cheshire by SUP. You’ll need a license to paddle on the waterways mentioned below – We recommend joining British Canoeing, an On The Water membership includes both a license and public liability insurance.

River Weaver

The River Weaver Navigation spans 20 miles (including 5 locks) and provides plenty of scope for exploration by SUP. Launching is possible at various spots along the river, including a dedicated launch at Acton Swing Bridge (near Northwich) – providing access to what is an idyllic stretch of water with some beautiful Cheshire scenery.

On this natural waterway you’ll likely encounter water frequenting wildlife, the occasional leisure boat and some river flow/currents – this is a river afterall. Paddle either left towards Saltersford lock (past the rowing club) or right towards Dutton locks. Overall if you’re after a couple of hours peaceful paddling you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere better.

On-road/lay-by parking on Willow Green Lane by the Leigh Arms pub, access the launch by walking towards the swing bridge and down through the gate (no need to cross the busy A49).

Note the river bank is tree-lined in parts and inaccessible in long stretches when on the water, hence a buoyancy aid is a non-negotiable for your own safety.

Bridgewater Canal

The Bridgewater Canal is a 40 mile stretch of canal which runs through the heart of rural Cheshire. It’s popular for Canoeing and Kayaking, with SUPers enjoying its long and calm waters passing through countless picturesque locations (including canal-side pubs in places such as Lymm and Stockton Heath :D).

With the towpath running adjacent to the canal there are endless launch spots for your SUP. One such location with limited free canal-side parking is on Walton Lea Road, close to Walton Gardens in Warrington. There is space for 5-6 cars (arrive early on a weekend), the off-road parking is at the junction with Hough’s Lane next to the humpback bridge.

Be aware of boat traffic, low bridges, fishing tackle and the occasional marauding duck!

Macclesfield Canal

Macclesfield Canal is a 26 mile stretch of canal passing through many rural areas of east Cheshire. Its runs from the town of Marple (Greater Manchester) south through Macclesfield and Congleton, eventually linking up to the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Along with some great scenery which includes views of the Peak District, the canal has a Green Flag award (keep Britain tidy) so hopefully your paddling experience won’t be interrupted by floating ‘fatbergs’ or other human generated debris !

Launch points are scattered along the canal, with Bollington and Macclesfield being popular choices. Overall a great waterway for some peaceful countryside paddling.

Astbury Mere

Astbury Mere in Congleton is home to Astbury Watersports Centre, offering SUP hire, lessons and a friendly environment for all ages and abilities. It’s a great choice for families or anyone wanting a structured, well‑managed paddle session.

The lake is a good size for beginners, and the centre offers a range of watersports if you want to mix things up. Parking is available at the country park, and facilities include toilets and a café.

Safety is well‑managed, with buoyancy aids required and staff on hand. It’s a relaxed, easygoing spot — ideal if you want a simple, no‑stress paddle.

Hazards

Water can be dangerous, expect the unexpected and be aware of wind speed which can make paddling (and staying on your board) harder – always carry a phone and please wear a buoyancy aid.

Remember – we cannot highlight all potential hazards when out in the great outdoors. Safety is ultimately down to you. Educate yourself in safety, weather reports, navigation and equipment specific to the activity you intend to undertake and conditions/terrain you may encounter! Check out adventuresmart.uk for general outdoor safety considerations – and activity specific guidance for hill walking, paddle boarding, mountain biking and open water swimming.

Final Thoughts

The lakes, rivers and canals of Cheshire promise SUPing fun for all, whether you’re after calm waters, scenic paddles, longer distance glides or chilled out vibes – there is a spot to suit your needs and budget.
